Any recommendations for ingrown hairs?

There is a spot on my neck (under the jaw line) that has this problem. I'm just about to quit shaving altogether. Could there be an underlying cause? I've been shaving for nearly 20 years, so it's not that I'm doing it wrong :). It just started about 6 months ago.

My husband has this problem sometimes. You need to exfoliate! I know it sounds girly, but you can buy St. Ives apricot scrub for around 3 bucks at the grocery store or the pharmacy, and SCRUB your face with it before you shave. This gets rid of all the dead skin cells that like to build up, especially around hairs, and it ensures you get the closest shave possible. My husband won't do it all the time, he calls it foo foo juice, but when I can get him to, he doesn't usually break out. Just don't buy the one in the white tube because it's medicated and could cause a rash if you shave right on top of it.

An ingrown hair is a hair that curls and penetrates the skin with its tip, causing inflammation. Ingrown hairs are more common among people with very curly hair. Most ingrown hairs occur in the beard area. An ingrown hair often heals on its own. However, in the case of chronic ingrown hairs, treatment may include:

allow the hair to grow longer

depilatory (to remove the hair)

electrolysis (to remove the hair)

According to this magazine I read, if you keep your skin well-lotioned and save with hot shaving cream, it could most certainly prevent them; I would get one of those men's lotions.

Try exfoiliating with a paste made from course sea salt. Sea salt is naturally healing, has no scent and is relatively in expensive. Mix sea salt with just enough water to make a paste and use it to scrub ALL areas you shave twice a day, evening and night works best.

Also, what shaving method do u use? It may be best to switch to the blade and water method. Another trick to help with that is to shave LAST when bathing. The warm water will soften the skin. Also leave your shaving cream on for a few min to soften the hair or you can apply conditioner for your hair to your beard and allow it to soften while you clean the rest of your body and then apply shaving cream over it and shave that way...Good luck
